Our ‘why?’: The Permian Challenge
The oil and gas industry produces more than 77 billion barrels of wastewater annually with no sustainable method for restoring it to beneficial reuse. Drilling operations in the Permian Basin produce the highest volumes of hypersaline water with few alternatives other than deep well disposal. Only ~20% of this water is recycled for hydraulic fracturing, the remaining~80% goes to saltwater disposal (SWD) facilities.
SWD injection is believed to be responsible for the significant seismic activity in the Permian Basin. There is an urgent need for desalination alternatives to SWD disposal to ensure the longevity of the oil and gas industry in the Permian. Pivotal has discovered a way to effectively manage wastewater whilst creating immense value for oil producers.
