Solutions
We build commercial (Pivotal-owned) and dedicated (customer-owned) facilities, called “brine refineries”. Customers can choose the configuration of a Pivotal facility based on their needs, from basic solids removal and oil recovery to a full suite of industrial fluids management.

Oil upgrading
Chemical upcycling
Desalination
Beneficial reuse
Trace amounts of oil (typically 0.3-1%) found in produced water present a significant value to producers at the scale seen in the Permian Basin. Pivotal employs highly innovative technologies in proprietary process trains to efficiently treat produced water, including solids removal, thereby reducing its impact on existing infrastructure.
Phase separation
Off-spec oil (sometimes called slop oil) is a mixture of oil, water and solids that does not satisfy quality requirements. Pivotal upgrades off-spec oil and oil skimmed from produced water into sales-quality oil which is then sold to the market or blended into the producer’s oil stream depending on the facility type.
Oil upgrading
Over time, fluids from gas plants and other O&G activities become contaminated with salts and metals and require replacement with fresh material or regeneration. These fluids are treated at Pivotal facilities in our proprietary process. Our byproducts are water (blended with our produced water recycling) and upcycled chemical products.
Chemical upcycling
Water disposal demand is expected to outpace the supply in the Permian Basin. Pivotal reduces disposal volumes by ~50%. The produced water from the Permian is some of the most hypersaline in the world. Pivotal recovers clean water (distillate) and is exploring emerging technologies that push past solubility limits.
Desalination
Pivotal’s newest development in our process train is the deployment of a proprietary brine mining process to extract valuable minerals from concentrated saline water. Pivotal is also exploring proprietary water value upcycling processes that produce higher-value compounds from pre-treated water.
